Arabian Jazz is a novel of character and characterization, with various types of female and male characters, catalogues representing different values and different worlds. Responding to Robin Field's question: "Do you feel a responsibility to the Arab and Arab American community as a writer? Some of the stories you tell are 'forbidden stories'", Abu-Jaber says: [a]s far as an obligation or responsibility, I do feel I have a responsibility to create as true and multilayered a character experience as I can. I'm very interested in the experience of empathy and creating a connection with the reader. The best thing a novelist can do is create characters that you really connect with, because if you feel with your characters, then I think that it enables us to feel with other people. Novels are tutorials in how to connect and empathize with others. Novels are one of the very few forms that we have available to really instruct us in the experiences of others. So I do take that very seriously. But it's not a cultural responsibility--it's more about art. (Field 211)
